margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">One of my favorite all-time cities is also one of the best for street photography. I was lucky enough to be in Paris for a few days last spring. From the entertainers in Montmartre, to artists on the banks of the Seine, to quiet moments of people going on about their lives, the city is abuzz with image possibilities. I feel like a voyeur, but I'm never stalking; the camera is in plain view. Some may be curious as to why I'm photographing them, but I have yet to be turned away, except for some con artists in Montmartre, who did not appreciate me photographing their little scam in action! I try to be deliberate in my composition, which is sometimes difficult when a scene is unfolding quickly before me, but intention is so important in making images. Yes, there are spontaneous moments, but I always try to determine what story I'm trying to tell with the image while shooting. La vie est belle. Enjoy! View more Paris images here.

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dkhQOUUZ27Q/TpbtBtQGHEI/AAAAAAAAAXs/ZjeLK2XHp_c/s1600/FRA_110328_00038.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. I've been there several times and it always exceeds my expectations, and this time was no exception. It's a city steeped in history and tradition, as evidenced by the usual sites of the Tower of London, Westminster and the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. But it's also an incredibly diverse, international, dynamic, modern city. Who knew that a major anti-government protest would take place during our stay (and that it was completely cleaned up by the next day)? Or that I would taste an amazing pasta dish at a gastro-pub run by Polish restaurateurs while meeting Scottish football fans wearing kilts?

Of course the entire city is buzzing about the upcoming royal wedding: scaffolding set up outside of Buckingham Palace for the international media, Will & Kate souvenirs galore, and everyone, from royals to housewives to taxi drivers ready to party on April 29.

London is a great place to bring kids for their first European adventure. Make sure you don't do too much in a day (one major site per day), visit a lot of parks and keep them well fed.

To see more images of London, click here.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); It was 5am. Grabbing my camera, I walked down the footpath and stumbled onto the sight of hundreds of headlamps snaking around Turquoise Lake, the sound of athletic shoes hitting the dirt, the adrenaline palpable on this very early August morning. The sight was incredible, but even more amazing was that these runners were only just beginning: they were about 7 miles into a hundred mile race known as the Leadville Trail 100. Welcome to the world of ultra-endurance running...

Running the Leadville Trail 100 is a brutal undertaking. Racers start at 10,200 feet at 4am in the town of Leadville, Colorado, run up and down rugged mountain trails, including the formidable Hope Pass at 12,6oo feet, cross streams and endure whatever weather comes their way, only to backtrack and run back over the same trails for the last 50 miles, all (hopefully) within the 30-hour time limit. They risk altitude sickness, hypothermia, hypoxia, dehydration, extreme fatigue, blisters and pain that will last far longer than the duration of the race.

When I first found out my friend Andy was planning to do this, my first thought was, of course, that he might be insane. But I also had questions: Do you sleep? How do you eat? Do you stop at all? How do you carry water and supplies? Why on earth are you doing this?! Bitten by the curiosity bug, I decided to follow my frirend on his intrepid journey and try to show other mere mortals what takes place during such a race.

As I looked around the 6th Street Gym in Leadville the day before the race, I was surprised by the variety of people who were signed up to run: men and women of every shape, size, color and age. Endurance runners from all over the country and all over the world descend on this little Colorado mining town to test their abilities. One thing they did all have in common was a serious lack of body fat.

Most of the runners are in their 30s or older, some well into their 70s. They have time and patience on their sides when it comes to endurance. They are willing to train every week, as Andy did, taking time away from their families who support their efforts, as crazy as they might be. Family and friends act as support crew during the race and meet their runners at various aid stations along the route, making sure they have what they need in terms of food, liquids, and changes of clothes.

Of the 647 starters in this race, 363 finished in under 30 hours. I saw people with bloodied limbs, some no longer able to stand and being carried out, and a few getting horribly sick on the side of the road. But why undertake something like this in the first place? Perhaps some are running away from somthing. A lot of people do it because they truly love to run. Some do it to compete against other runners, but most are working on personal goals, to push a little harder, run a little faster, and to see what they can accomplish.

The reward for all of this effort: a small medal, a silver and gold belt buckle, and maybe a sweatshirt. But most importantly, they are rewarded in having tried and succeeded at something that is beyond the comprehension of most of us.

Andy made it across the finish line in the cold, dark, early morning of August 22nd, within his goal of 25 hours. It wasn't easy and his quads were screaming, but he made it and can have the satisfaction of accomplishing the incredible feat of running for 100 miles and joining an elite group of athletes in the process. It truly is remarkable what the human body, mind and spirit can do when pushing through limitations. Congratulation, Andy, and all the runners of the Leadville Trail 100!

"You're better than you think you are - you can do more than you think you can." -- Leadville Trail 100 founder Ken Chlouber.

To see more photos of the Leadville Trail 100, click here.

Teri K. Jacques, who lost his sight at age eight, was a visionary, and his book is amazing on so many levels.

Jacques did not believe he was handicapped. In fact, he writes so eloquently about how he has been given this gift of blindness, which not only heightens his other senses, but gives him more awareness and intuition. As the leader of a youth resistance movement during World War II, he recruited members and insisted on meeting them in person to get a sense of their character. Although his intuition failed him once, which led to his betrayal, it also helped him to survive a French prison and a German concentration camp.

This rich story is enhanced by his beautiful prose and his thoughts on courage, intuition, friendship, humanity, spirituality, vision and truth. He writes of two truths: "The first of these is that joy does not come from outside, for whatever happens to us it is within. The second truth is that light does not come to us from without. Light is in us, even if we have no eyes."

All so true.

The story reminded me of a blind man that I photographed in Mexico. He sat in a wheelchair in a public park, covered in a bright yellow blanket. A friend had asked to photograph him earlier and he had refused. Somehow I knew I had to ask him myself, and for some reason he accepted my request. What did I have to offer him? He would never see the photo. But I knew that I had to give it my best shot, and portray him with the dignity and respect I felt he deserved. I got low, as the afternoon sun was just hitting his face. I took a few shots, thanked him profusely and bought him a cold drink, which was all he asked for in return. We spoke little, but both enjoyed the connection we had just made. There was something there, a light in this man's eyes (although he could not physically see) that told me that he had seen a lot in his lifetime. The light was outside and within. I hope that I captured that in this image.

Trust your gut, look for the light, connect. She had been listening intently to my daughter playing the piano, clapping along, and then was wheeled over to the piano herself, where she played songs she knew by heart from long ago.

I don't know why I was drawn to her hands in that moment - it was purely an emotional response to what I was seeing. These lovely hands that were now wrinkled, spotted, with skin as thin as rice paper, could barely place a button into a buttonhole. These were hands that once had incredible strength, used for raising babies, working on a farm, cleaning houses, making rhubarb pies, and hugging her grandchildren so tightly that we could hardly breathe. These hands were hard-working, practical, useful - yet in her later years, my grandmother still enjoyed getting a manicure and wearing all of her gold jewelry.

The person attached to these hands had witnessed an incredible life and time in our history. The oldest of 12 children, she outlived many of her siblings and was widowed 3 times. During her lifetime, 18 U.S. presidents held office, the right to vote given to women and people of color, and 2 World Wars were fought. Her frugality and hard work came from suffering through the Great Depression.

And, yet I didn't really think about those things until now. I had a moment a few weeks ago when I saw perfect ice crystals falling from the sky, the kind of snowflakes that kids always try to replicate with paper cut-outs. These particular snowflakes were incredibly detailed, asymmetrical, and, well, perfect. I tried my best to capture them with my camera and my efforts were quite imperfect. I berated myself for not having the ideal gear, or the perfect unshaky hands. How could I not capture this flawless beauty and share it with the world?

Well, it's not so easy. I tried, I failed. But then I started thinking about "perfect." I am a recovering perfectionist. I say "recovering" because it's very much still a process for me to make mistakes, to fail, to be imperfect. I was the kind of student that was not satisfied unless I had an A+, not just an A. My papers had to be impeccable or else it was a failure in my mind. I have slowly gotten over that mindset. In fact, I try my best (but I'm not perfect!) to teach my daughter that failure is necessary to learn. I don't want her to be worried about getting things absolutely perfect. We are all constantly in process and learning to better ourselves. If we attain perfection, what is left to learn? Perfection can also mean stagnation and stalling growth. So I make mistakes, even big ones, and hopefully I learn from them and continue to grow, in my work and my life.

As I saw those "perfect" snowflakes I couldn't help but think how perfect nature is. But then I really thought about it. Like human nature, nature itself is not perfect either. When you think about it, evolution is the epitome of learning from mistakes. A plant or animal evolves and continually makes itself better - over long periods of time, but still, it isn't "perfect." It's "survival of the fittest," not survival of the most sublime being. So, when I really looked at those snowflakes, they were not perfect, but they were beautiful nonetheless, as is the pine tree that leans at an almost impossible angle and still survives, or the photographer who fails at one image, but keeps trying with others. (And, yes, this is an imperfect blog post!)

Teri K. I am slowly counting off the months until spring - well, spring here just means more snow...

So what does one do in Colorado in the midst of the bleakness?

I want to cocoon, I want to sit by my fireplace with a good book and drink some cocoa. I don't want to. I resist the cold, I hate the cold, I despise winter, my fingers always freeze, I want to move to Tahiti. I will try every excuse in the book to stay in the heat. But instead I will venture out. I know there are images out there. I stop the whining, muster up some strength, get out of my comfort zone and pursue this self-assignment. I will find the beauty in the bleakness of a cold winter day.

It turns out to not be too difficult. Not very far from my own door, I start to see incredible things. A light snow has just fallen, and fog blanketed the mountains overnight, which covered everything in a thin layer of ice and frost. As the sun comes up, it shines through the icy trees. I tried to capture the energy of the sun while hitting the frozen landscape...

This last one is inspired by Chase Jarvis and his Best Camera philosophy. It was evening, had been snowing, cloudy and cold - it could not get more bleak than this. I was sitting in my car in a parking lot and saw the streetlight shining through the snow on the windshield. Yes, this was taken with the iPhone. I love the contrast of the cool natural light and the warmth from the streetlight.

For more images, please see the gallery in my Photoshelter Archive.

Teri K. Is it innate? Must artists wait for their personal muse to bestow them with some type of magic? Personally, I don't think so. Having read Twyla Tharp's wonderful book "The Creative Habit," I know that creativity is something that must be learned and nurtured through discipline and habit. No matter what your creative pursuits (and everyone is creative in their own way), Ms. Tharp's exercises and rituals launch you right into the blank canvas or page or wherever your creative impulses take you.

Since I feel that my own creativity could use a kick-start this year, I'll be scheduling time for self-assignments every week and giving myself permission to play, to produce work that may be different from what I normally do, and even permission to fail ("the only real failure in life is the failure to try"). I hope you'll join me on this journey and learn some amazing things along the way.

This photograph is one of my favorite abstracts from last year. Jump into a hole cut out of the middle of a frozen lake? Crazy? Maybe...but that's what more than 200 people, from age 7 to 78, did at Evergreen Lake on New Year's Day, raising money to benefit DriveSmart and EPRD Special Needs/Special Olympics program in the process. Yes, they PAID to jump in. Personally, someone would have to pay ME to jump in water that is less than the temperature of a warm bath. But these courageous souls did it, with trepidation or with gusto, in full costume or in skimpy bathing suits, all in their own way, with their own brand of style.

I commend them all for taking the plunge - certainly jumping into excruciatingly cold water is risky. What motivates us to take a risk? Is it for charity, for money, for bragging rights, for attention, for a sense of accomplishment? We all take risks, for different reasons and in many different ways: skiing down a double black diamond run, skydiving, submitting that first novel, or asking someone out on a date. Risk-taking comes in many forms.

I am usually the observer with the camera, watching others participate or take risks. Last fall I took my own (figurative) plunge and became a participant, by auditioning and taking a part in a play. Uncomfortable and outside my element? Yes - but also satisfying, exhilarating and just plain fun! As a photographer, I take my own risks, physically, mentally and creatively, but I'm usually working alone in the creative process. In a play, the cast and crew works together throughout the process, sharing in the frustrations and the joys, all cooperating for the end result. In spite of the tolls it took on my time and energy, I enjoyed being a part of this process and the shared experiences gained from it.

The shrieks, screams and occasional curses I heard from the Polar Plungers told me that hitting that water was definitely not comfortable, and maybe even painful, but the support from the surrounding crowds was unwavering and encouraging. In any type of risk-taking, fear or discomfort is necessary, but once you've done it, you get past the tough part, and it may be a little bit easier the next time you do it - and whether you know it or not, others will be cheering you on. I know I've been inspired by these gutsy folks. So, with whatever risk you're thinking of taking this year - go ahead, take the plunge, feel the fear, and the joy or accomplishment in having done it!

Check out all the fun Polar Plunge photos HERE!

"If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves."

--Thomas A.
